“Glutened! What do I do now???”

You feel it right when it starts. You think “Oh no! Not again! I was so careful! !” But perhaps there was cross contamination at that restaurant and that entrée wasn’t really gluten free. Perhaps someone snuck some flour into the sauce at that potluck (Potlucks are often a nightmare for those of us with Celiac or multiple food allergies). Perhaps Aunt Betty put just a spoonful of wheat flour in the casserole, because, after all, it isn’t like it’s bread!  Your belly starts to fill up with air like a balloon , but the air just sits there and grows until your back hurts too from the pressure on your internal organs. Next the deep fatigue and brain fog set in and you want to go lie down somewhere quiet and dark because you can’t even sit or stand up straight the pain in your gut is so bad. So until you can get yourself to bed, your are walking around hunched over.   But you know! You’ve been “glutened” !...

Bone Broth Recipes!

For many of my patients who have GI issues such as food allergies, celiac disease, candida overgrowth, etc.  I often recommend bone broth to aid in restoring and repairing the villi of the GI tract.  Bone broth contains easily digestible micronutrients and minerals to help tissues to repair properly.  Bone broth is also useful when recovering from any chronic debilitating illness as well as a supportive therapy while undergoing cancer treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation.  It is important to use the bones of organically raised chickens and grass fed beef and pork to avoid introducing harmful chemicals into the body.


Winter Bone and Vegetable Soup
1-2 pounds of bones (lamb, chicken, or beef), chopped into large pieces
2 tomatoes, peeled, seeded, and halved
2 small potatoes, peeled and quartered
1 onion, peeled and quartered
3 garlic cloves, peeled
2 sticks celery, peeled and cut in half
2 carrots, peeled and cut in half

Heal the Gut! (What???)

So many of the chronic, inflammatory, and autoimmune diseases that I see over and over again in my practice can be helped by looking at and focusing treatment on healing the GI tract, or the gut.  Many  of my patients who seem to have disparate symptoms and names for their diagnosed illnesses benefit from this  approach.   Illnesses from arthritis, to Graves disease to Lupus, to Chronic Fatigue to Interstitial Cystitis to Skin conditions, to Chronic Vaginitis, to   Inflammatory Bowel Disease and IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome ), etc. .  Many  patients are initially skeptical that their  bladder, skin,  joints, thyroid have anything to do with their GI tract.  But so many patients have benefited tremendously from this approach, that often the first place that I and other naturopathic doctors look is  at the GI tract.
