Greetings!
As everyone knows the swine flu is BIG news right
now. While I had originally planned a different topic
for this month's newsletter, real life has a way of
changing things! I have a family story from 1918 of
my own. My grandmother caught the flu in 1918 and
survived. She would have been in her early 20's then.
While I always remember that she had white hair (she
was old!), the story goes that after she recovered from
the flu her hair came in pure white. During the
1918 Flu pandemic which killed an estimated 70 -
100 million people worldwide, the homeopaths had
the lowest mortality rate and the largest success in
recovery to the flu using their homeopathic remedies.
Homeopathy works by choosing a remedy that best fits
the constellation of physical, mental and emotional
symptoms for each individual person being treated.
While we now have some antiviral pharmaceuticals
like Tamiflu that we didn't have in 1918, I still believe
that looking back into the homeopathic materia
medica (the old homeopathic textbooks) can give us
the best clues on how to combat any pandemic.
Hopefully this will prove to be much ado about
nothing, but just in case (better safe than sorry) it is
always good to have some tools at your disposal to
lessen the severity of such an illness. Stay well and
as always I will be available to treat and advise should
the flu come a calling! I also offer phone consults ( if
one doesn't or shouldn't want to leave home) to assist
you on a natural and probably more effective
naturopathic and homeopathic approach for this. Be
well!

Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of
pigs caused by type A influenza virus that regularly
causes outbreaks of influenza in pigs. Swine flu
viruses cause high levels of illness and low death
rates in pigs. Swine influenza viruses may circulate
among swine throughout the year, but most outbreaks
occur during the late fall and winter months similar to
outbreaks in humans.
The 2009 flu outbreak in humans is due to a new
strain of influenza A virus subtype H1N1 that derives
in part from human influenza, avian influenza, and two
separate strains of swine influenza. The origins of this
new strain are unknown. It passes with apparent ease
from human to human, an ability attributed to an as-yet
unidentified mutation. The strain in most cases causes
only mild symptoms and the infected person makes a
full recovery without requiring medical attention and
without the use of antiviral medicines. From
Hpathy - Tara's note - also consider Nux vomica for
this season's flu!

In early April of 2005, after a particularly rainy spring,
an influenza epidemic (epi: upon, demic: people)
exploded through the maximum-security hospital for
the criminally insane where I have worked for the last
ten years. It was not the pandemic (pan: all, demic:
people) we all fear, just an epidemic. The world is
waiting and governments are preparing for the next
pandemic. A severe influenza pandemic will kill many
more Americans than died in the World Trade Centers,
the Iraq war, the Vietnam War, and Hurricane Katrina
combined, perhaps a million people in the USA alone.
Such a disaster would tear the fabric of American
society. Our entire country might resemble the
Superdome or Bourbon Street after Hurricane
Katrina. From Medical News Today

Lately I've been receiving many queries about which
herbs can be used in the prevention and treatment of
Avian Flu (a.k.a. The Bird Flu). There is no definitive
answer to this question, nor am I able to locate any
scientific research on this subject. However, as
herbalists are always doing, we can look back in
history for some possible answers.
During the pandemic of 1918-19 over 50-million
people died worldwide from what was then know as
"Spanish Flu" or "La Grippe." This was the most
devastating epidemic in recorded history and infected
one-fifth of the world's population. An estimated 28%
of the American population was infected and 675,000
died during the pandemic. Of the U.S. soldiers who
died in Europe during World War I, half died from the
influenza pandemic and not from the enemy. In the
USA influenza had a mortality rate of 2.5%, with many
people dying within hours of manifesting
symptoms. by Ed Smith (Herbal Ed)

| Artichoke Recipes |

While artichokes are almost in season, I chose them as
this month's vegetable because Spring according to the
Chinese calendar is the season of the liver, and
artichokes support the liver much in the way that milk
thistle, its botanical relative does. Enjoy! But go easy on
the butter!

How the Swine Flu may be different and What to do |
|
|
|
While most of the standard advice about flu prevention
has to do with keeping your immune system really
healthy, looking back into history at the "Spanish" flu of
1918, there are some alarming similarities where we
need to use some intelligence and approach general
treatment a bit differently than in a "normal" flu.
One of the main things that alarmed the
epidemiologists about the Swine flu is that the highest
mortality rate was among healthy adults aged 20-40
with strong immune systems. This is similar to the
mortality rate of the 1918 pandemic. Researchers
now believe that what made the 1918 flu so virulent
was that the virus produced "cytokine storms" which is
a severe immune reaction that turns deadly. Only
those with strong immune systems could mount such a
ferocious immunological attack on the body. Also
it is alarming in that the virus seems to have mutated
rather rapidly. What I am hearing a lot from many
people is a counter reaction to the hysteria ("Come on!
It's only the flu!) But keep in mind that while the flu may
be for most people rather mild , the 1918 strain
mutated from a mild form (which afforded immunity to
those who caught it initially) to a more severe form that
was deadly a year later rapidly producing the cytokine
storm. While I am not intending anyone to panic,
and I fully believe that homeopathy and naturopathy
have MUCH (if not the MOST) to offer in the way of
successful treatment, it may be contraindicated to take
things such as Echinacea which strongly stimulate the
immune system if one contracts this particular flu. I
say this only because many of you like to self treat and
Echinacea is often the first thing people use when they
get sick with a cold or flu. Please realize that this
is my thinking only and as this unfolds (and hopefully
goes away.... into nothing!) we will know more. I am
already collaborating and networked with other
practicing homeopaths and naturopaths. Please feel
free to contact me with any questions or concerns! Be
well, eat LOTS of fruits and veggies in all colors of the
rainbow, drink lots of purified filtered water, get out
into the sunshine, and wash your hands!
